130 years Strandhotel Duhnen

A journey through time full of memories, change and genuine hospitality

A house that has grown with you

For 130 years, the Strandhotel Duhnen has been more than just a hotel – it is a place to return to. Many of our regular guests not only know the rooms and the view of the sea, but have also witnessed the development of our hotel over the years, sometimes even decades. It is precisely this shared history that we would like to bring back to life today – with the most important milestones that have shaped our hotel.

The years of birth right by the sea

1896 to 1905

It all began when Amandus Mangels built it in 1896. A single building, directly on the North Sea, which quickly became a popular place to go. An extension was added shortly afterwards: in 1898, a two-storey porch with an enlarged veranda was built. This was followed in 1905 by the addition of a hall with a turret and beer garden – the social centre of the building at the time, where people celebrated, danced and came together.

The Kamp family takes over and shapes the house

1922 to 1950s

The year 1922 was a decisive turning point: Friedrich Wilhelm Kamp took over the hotel, laying the foundations for the family tradition that still exists today. As early as 1923, the building was extended by a further floor – an important step to provide more space for more guests. This period is particularly formative for many long-standing guests: it laid the foundations for what the Strandhotel is today – a family-run hotel with a personal touch.

Growth that many have experienced themselves

1957 to 1973

In the post-war years, a phase began that many of our regular guests still remember from their own memories: in 1957, the hotel was extended with additional rooms – more space for an increasing number of guests. This was followed in 1958 by the construction of the Seehotel – a milestone that significantly increased the range of services on offer. In 1964/65, the Strandhotel and Seehotel were connected by the characteristic corner building – a change that still characterises the appearance of the hotel today. And in 1973, a particularly striking step was taken: the former hall was converted into a swimming pool – a real highlight for many guests and a place of relaxation to this day.

Further development with a view to the future

1976 until today

The Strandhotel also kept moving in the following decades: a new building was constructed in 1976, which modernised the hotel and allowed it to grow further. In 1998, the aparthotel was opened – ideal for guests who want to enjoy longer stays and want a piece of “home by the sea”. And just a few years ago, in 2021, the connection between the Strandhotel and Seehotel was strengthened and given a modern interpretation with a new corner building. Many of our regular guests have accompanied these changes step by step – and that’s what makes this story so special: it’s a shared one.

What connects us to this day

We are particularly proud of our family roots: the hotel has been run by the Kamp family for over 100 years – now in its fourth generation. You can feel this continuity – in the personal service, the familiarity and the special atmosphere that makes so many guests return to us again and again.

130 years of Strandhotel Duhnen means:

  • unforgettable moments for generations of guests
  • a home for dedicated employees
  • an integral part of the region and its history

We say thank you – to you. For your loyalty, your memories and the many years together.

And we look forward to continuing to write new chapters with you in the future – with a view of the sea and a heart for genuine hospitality.
